Biography

Ran Tao is the Presidential Chair Professor, Director of the Development and Governance division. He served as a professor in the School of Economics at Renmin University of China based at Beijing since 2009. A specialist on China’s political economy and transition, he has published 48 English articles on economics, political science and sociological, demographic and geographical journals and over 60 articles on Chinese core social science journals. His research topics range from the political economy of China’s economic transition, land development and migration in China’s urbanization, urban redevelopment, to village election, local governance and public finance in China. He was selected as the top Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researchers in the field of Theoretical Economics for the years of 2020 and 2021. He is currently serving in the editorial board for Oxford Development Studies. His coauthored paper published on American Journal of Sociology (Volume 122 Number 6, May 2017) has won the Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Article Award (Best Published Article Award) in Collective Behavior & Social Movements by the American Sociological Association. His research has been funded by two Chinese National Science Foundation large grant programs and one Chinese National Social Science large grant program. He has frequently consulted the Chinese central government and local governments on land reform and urban development.
