Welcome to
TONG, Shuk Yin David WEBSITE
Prof S Y Tong is a leading figure internationally in the area of surface structure determination. He developed quantitative low energy electron diffraction (q-LEED), photoelectron diffraction and holography, high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and applied these techniques to determine surface structure. Prof Tong is also a prominent figure internationally in areas of crystal growth, heteroepitaxy, surface catalysis and use of hydrogen as a fuel.
Prof Tong was the founding Dean of the Graduate School from 2015-2021. From 2011-2014, Prof Tong was Chair of the Academic Committee and leading professor at SUSTech. From 2004-2014, Prof Tong was Director of the National Laboratory of Materials at the Microscale of the Chinese University of Science and Technology, Hefei. From 2004-2009, Prof Tong was Deputy President of the City University of Hong Kong and in 2002-2003, Prof Tong was the Vice-President of Academic Affairs of the City University of Hong Kong. From 1994-2001, Prof Tong was Head of the Department of Physics at the University of Hong Kong. From 1988-2000, Prof Tong was Distinguished Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. From 1988-1990, Prof Tong was Director of the Condensed Matter Physics Program at the National Science Foundation.
Prof Tong received the Croucher Award in 1997. He was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001 and Fellow of the American Physical Society in the same year. In 2010, he was elected member of the World Academy of Sciences. In 1986, he was elected Chair of the American Vacuum Society.
