Caiming SUN, Senior Member of IEEE, Research Associate Professor of School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from Beijing Normal University in 2002 and 2005 respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2008. After PhD graduation, he continues working in CUHK as a Postdoc Fellow. Then, he works as a Technical Manager in Nano and Advanced Material Institute Ltd. He has more than 15 years of R&D experience, supported by NSFC, HK ITF, etc. In 2016, he joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. His research interests include Optical Wireless Communications, Optical Phased Array, LiDAR for robotics, and Legged robots. He has published more than 50 papers in top journals and conference proceedings (JSTQEJLTOptics ExpressOptics LettersOFCCLEO, ICRA, and IROS), and granted over 30 patents (8 granted US patents).

Research

Funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) general/key projects and Shenzhen Fundamental Research key project, we explore the chip-scale silicon photonics Optical Phased Array (OPA). Based on SOI and SiNx process platform, we succeed in designing and fabricating OPA chips for potential applications in LiDAR, Optical Wireless Communication (OWC), and sensors. Especially, OPA is integrated into OWC transceivers, with fast and self-adaptive Acquisition-Tracking-Pointing (ATP). The integrated OPAs can suppress the OWC link fluctuations in air and water, and beam wandering caused by water-air waves. We are focusing on broadband OPA, sparse phased array, and adaptive on-chip transceiver.
