Biography

Zhuang Liu received a Bachelor of Law and a Ph.D. in Law from Peking University, and an LLM and a J.S.D. from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on empirical studies of judicial behavior. He applies both traditional methods, such as statistical analysis and regression models, and AI technologies and big data algorithms, such as natural language processing, topic model analysis, machine learning, to study massive judicial decision data in China. As a legal scholar who uses AI and big data in research, he also studies the emerging role and the regulation of AI and big data. His current research projects include using massive judicial opinion and media data in China to predict judicial decision and public reaction; using economic analysis to study the regulation of big data and AI technologies; using experiments to study the hidden behavior patterns of judges (e.g., decision biases and debiasing); using survey data and experiment to study public punitive attitude in China; using mobile telecom network and law compliance data in China to study why people (dis)obey the law. His work has appeared in a number of leading academic journals.
